SPOKANE, Wash. — Washington State University seniors in interior design walked away with the honors at this year’s American Society of Interior Design, Washington Chapter student design competition, taking first and second place and an honorable mention.
The first-place and second-place students designed their winning design projects at WSU Spokane, where all WSU interior design students spend their final year learning in the context of the Interdisciplinary Design Institute.
Jamie Herring of Everett won first prize and $800 for her design of an agricultural interpretive center in George, completed for a studio taught by Matt Melcher, WSU Spokane assistant professor of interior design. Jurors rated Herring’s work “outstanding in every way — presentation, space planning, thought process, and overall design. The judges were very impressed with your ability and know that you will be a huge asset to the design community.”
Darci Rohrbach of Colville received second prize and $200 for the design of a retreat residence in central Washington, completed for a class taught by Melcher and adjunct faculty member Judy Theodorson.
Tony Yim of Hong Kong won honorable mention for a furniture design completed in a studio class on the Pullman campus.
Approximately 60 entries were received and reviewed from interior design programs across the state. The competition invited students to select any project completed in their program of study for professional peer review. The jury noted that WSU interior design students exceeded their level of expectations for design at the senior level.
