WSU Choral Concert March 14

PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State University School of Music and Theatre Arts will present a choral concert featuring the WSU Concert Choir, Madrigal Singers and University Singers at 8 p.m., March 14, in the Bryan Hall Auditorium.

The Madrigal Singers will perform an eclectic program of contemporary songs by Gerald Finzi and Healey Willan, an Italian madrigal by Claudio Monteverdi, an English lute song by John Dowland, and two arrangements of John Lennon and Paul McCartney songs, “And I Love Her” and “Can’t Buy Me Love.”

The Concert Choir’s performance will include two short compositions by Indiana composer Don Freund, who was recently featured at WSU’s New Music Festival. The concert will continue with Giuseppi Verdi’s “Ave Maria.” Mezzo-soprano soloist and a solo quartet will perform Debussy’s “Trois Chansons.” Pianist Ben Gudgeon will be featured in a performance of “An Die Heimat,” composed by Johannes Brahms. The Concert Choir’s performance will conclude with the energetic “Rytmus” composed by Ivan Hrusovsky.

The University Singers will perform “Bach Again” a resetting by Rhonda Sandberg of Bach’s chorale “Come Sweet Death.” The piece includes choreography and aleatoric work (the performers will determine the rhythm of the music). The singers also will perform the African-American gospel piece “Praise His Holy Name” by Keith Hampton. The two pieces are a juxtaposition of baroque and 20th century styles.
