PULLMAN, Wash. — Mark Anderson, executive director of Chess for America and a chess expert ranked in the top 10 percent of U.S. players, will offer free lessons and play a simultaneous match against all comers at 2 p.m., Jan. 27, in Washington State University’s Compton Union Building, Room 123.
The WSU Chess Club is sponsoring the extravaganza, which will include free lessons on basic chess rules and moves from club members before the event at 1:30–2 p.m. Chess players of all ages and ability levels are invited to the extravaganza, said Sophia Pereyra-Johnston, the club president.
Anderson, a doctoral candidate in political science at the University of Idaho, is a professional chess educator who has taught the game to students at more than 30 Washington and Idaho schools. He will offer hands-on group lessons at two levels, beginning and intermediate/advanced, followed by the simultaneous match at about 3:30 p.m.
Boards and pieces will be provided but those who attend are encouraged to bring their own equipment to the event.
