PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State University Board of Regents will consider approving a strategic plan that would help steer the institution in the future at a 9:30 a.m. meeting Friday, Jan. 25 in the Honors Hall Lounge, room 110.
The plan is a “living” document that contains goals university officials hope will strengthen WSU over the next five years. It also provides a framework for planning for all WSU units and a guide for budgets across campus. The goals are offering the best undergraduate experience in a research university; nurturing a world class environment for research, scholarship, graduate education, the arts and engagement; creating an environment of trust and respect in all the university does; and developing a culture of shared commitment to quality in all of WSU’s activities.
Also on the agenda is a proposal to designate Dr. James E. Blackwell as the 31st recipient of the Regent’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. Blackwell received his doctorate in sociology from WSU in 1959 and went on to teach at San Jose State University (1959-1963), Case Western Reserve University (1969-70) and the University of Massachusetts at Boston (1970-89). In addition, Blackwell also served in several posts for the U.S. Peace Corps. He is a lifetime member of the National Urban League and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
The board, too, will consider officially naming the Center for Undergraduate Education building the Samuel H. Smith Center for Undergraduate Education. The building houses state-of-the-art classrooms, offices and a host of programs including the General Education Program; Writing Program; student computer technology lab; the Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology; and a Cyber Café. It opened for classes in January.
