PULLMAN, Wash. — Experts will discuss apparent and real threats of bioterrorism at the open forum, “The Internal Threat: Bioterrorism and Homeland Defense,” 4-6 p.m. Oct. 24, in the Compton Union Building Auditorium on the Washington State University campus.
“The general themes are what are the perceived threats, what are the real threats and what steps can the United States take to protect itself,” said John Kicza, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
The panelists include Lt. Col. James M. Zuba, U.S. Army, professor of military science and an expert on the military and internal security; Charlie Powell, public information officer for the College of Veterinary Medicine and a specialist on crisis communications; Thomas Preston, associate professor in political science and a national security expert; Bill Edstrom, epidemiologist and bioterrorism surveillance coordinator, Spokane Regional Health District. Hugh Imhof, manager of media information at the Avista Corp., will serve as moderator.
The discussion will be broadcast live to audiences at WSU Vancouver and WSU Tri-Cities. Questions for the panelists may be sent by email to questions@wsu.edu.
The forum is the fourth in “An American Tragedy – A Discussion Series.” Organizers expanded the series, co-sponsored by the Associated Students of WSU, into a bi-weekly event partly because of high interest from students – more than 300 attended the last forum on the Middle East. Future forums are planned for Nov. 5.
