PULLMAN, Wash. — Students, faculty and staff from Washington State University and the University of Idaho received Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Awards here on Jan. 17.
The honors were presented by WSU President V. Lane Rawlins during WSU’s 14th annual evening program celebration honoring King. Held in the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum, Benjamin Hooks, former NAACP executive director and King’s friend, was the program keynote speaker.
Receiving the honor from WSU were undergraduate students Anita
Afzali and Sylvia Mendez; staff member Deborah Love; and Gisela Ernst-Slavit, a WSU Vancouver faculty member.
Honored from the UI were undergraduate student Kim T. Henon, graduate student Renee Walker, staff member Isabel Bond and faculty member Mary Voxman.
Winners were selected by the MLK Awards Committee on the basis of embracing and practicing the principles of umoja (unity), ujima (collective work and responsibility), nia (purpose), and kujichagulia (self-determination).
