PULLMAN, Wash.–The YWCA of Washington State University’s annual Week Without Violence is set for Oct. 16-20.
The kickoff activity will be a Poetry Jam at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Compton Union Building’s Cascade Room. Poet Noel Jones will emcee the contest of spoken words about nonviolence. Prizes of $50 and $100 will be awarded.
The men of Sigma Chi fraternity will hand out ribbons with pledges of nonviolence at Pullman High School and in front of the CUB on Oct. 17 as part of the Ribbon Campaign.
On Oct. 18, the YWCA will present an information fair from noon-1 p.m. at the CUB. Several agencies promoting nonviolence will attend the fair, including Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse, the Sexual Information and Referral Center, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Association, WSU Counseling Services, the Coalition for Women Students and Cougars Encouraging Alcohol Awareness.
The Take Back the Night March will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 19 on the Terrell Mall in front of Todd Hall. Representatives from several student organizations will speak at the march. A discussion session about nonviolence follows in Streit-Perham Hall. People carrying lighters will lead the way from the mall to the discussion room.
Also planned for the week is the Clothesline Project, a visual display of shirts bearing witness to violence against women, child abuse, bigotry, family violence and racism. Each shirt represents the personal experience of a survivor or someone who cares about a survivor of violence. The shirts can be viewed from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday outside the CUB. Materials to paint a shirt are available in Wilson Hall, Room 8.
