PULLMAN, Wash. — As part of Washington State University’s commitment to
diversity, students from Columbia Basin College’s Upward Bound program in
Pasco will take part in activities on the university’s Pullman campus.
About 35 high school students, including those from Connell, Eltopia, Mesa,
Kennewick, Pasco, Prosser and Richland, will be at WSU June 18-23 during the
first part of the six-week CBC Upward Bound summer program.
CBC Upward Bound has been successful over the past 10 years in preparing
low-income high school students to become first-generation college graduates.
While at WSU, the students will take part in writing, science, art and other
activities, said John Alaniz-Mendoza, a WSU Office of Multicultural Student
Services recruitment coordinator.
“Having these students on campus is a vital part of stressing the importance
of higher education,” said Steve Nakata, MSS director. “Visiting WSU and
taking part in activities shows attending college is realistic goal. Once a college
education is earned, there are a world of opportunities.”
