WSU Appoints Steven Hansen Interim Chief of Police

PULLMAN, Wash. — Sgt. Steven J. Hansen has been appointed interim chief
of police at Washington State University, effective June 1. Hansen will serve a
one-year term while a search is conducted for a permanent chief.

Greg Royer, WSU vice president for business affairs, made the appointment.
He praised Hansen’s high level of integrity and commitment to the university.
“He is respected by the other police officers on the staff. They have great
confidence in him and support his leadership role,” said Royer.

Hansen has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from WSU and is a 17-year
veteran of the WSU Police Department.

“I look forward to working with a police department that is filled with creative
and enthusiastic personnel,” Hansen said. “Over the course of the next year, I
hope to help bring about positive changes.”

Hansen’s appointment comes after the departure of William Mercier, who left
for a position at Indiana State.
