International Scholar to Visit WSU

PULLMAN, Wash. — Middle East scholar and author Cornell Hugh Fleischer
will visit Washington State University Tuesday, March 7, as part of the
Visiting Scholar Program.

The University of Chicago faculty member will speak at 4 p.m. in Todd Hall,
Room 133. A reception follows the lecture.

His speech, “Religion and State are Twins: Mysticism and Prophecy in the
Formation of Islamic Modernity,” will reflect the influence of Islam in modern
states.

He has received a MacArthur Fellowship and was a resident scholar at the
Rockefeller Study Center in Italy.

The Visiting Scholar Program is sponsored by Phi Beta Kappa honor society.
Scholars spend two days on campus participating in classroom discussion,
meeting students and faculty, and giving a public lecture.
