U.S. News & World Report Ranks WSU as a Tier 2 National University

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University is ranked as a Tier 2 national university
by U.S. News & World Report in its annual college rankings, putting WSU in the upper half of
the country’s major universities.
According to the magazine’s just-issued Best Colleges Guidebook 2000, other Tier 2
institutions include Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oregon, Purdue and
Texas A&M.
“This is wonderful credit to the university as a whole and especially to its quality and
dedicated faculty and staff and their extraordinary focus on serving students,” said WSU
President Samuel Smith.
“For the second year in a row, WSU has been ranked as a Tier 2 national university. It adds
to WSU’s growing national reputation. This recognizes many attributes, including the
university’s continuing success extending education statewide and the progress made by WSU
through a variety of partnerships,” he said.
There are 228 national universities in the country (147 public, 81 private), based on
categories developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. They are
grouped in four tiers by the magazine.
