Finalists Named for WSU College of Pharmacy Dean Post

PULLMAN, Wash. — Three finalists for dean of the Washington State University College of
Pharmacy will visit the Pullman and Spokane campuses during interviews starting next week.
The candidates are William E. Fassett, professor and chair of Drake University’s Department
of Pharmacy Practice, Des Moines, Iowa; Patricia Chase, facilitator for professional education
and professor at the College of Pharmacy, Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona,
Calif.; and Thomas H. Wiser of Carmel, Ind., a private consultant on pharmaceutical and managed
care group issues.
Public seminars with the candidates will be scheduled over the Washington Higher
Education Telecommunications Systems to WSU campuses, the Intercollegiate Center for
Nursing Education/College of Nursing and the nursing center in Yakima.
Fassett’s seminar is planned for 8-9:30 a.m. April 15. Chase’s program will be 10:15-11:45 a.m.
April 22, while the public seminar with Wiser is planned for 10:15-11:45 a.m. May 12.
Fassett earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy and a doctorate in educational leadership
and policy studies from the University of Washington. He has worked as a community
pharmacist and pharmacy consultant. Fassett held several positions with the UW School of
Pharmacy’s Program in Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Policy, including coordinator of the
Professional Experience Programs from 1980-86, and faculty and affiliated faculty positions
through 1998. He has been chair of the Drake pharmacy practice department since 1994.
Chase has assisted in development of a new college of pharmacy. She is responsible for the
college’s curriculum design and implementation and assessment. From 1990-96, she was a
professor of pharmacy for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center’s School of
Pharmacy and director of pharmacy for the University Hospital, both in Denver. Chase earned
her bachelor’s in pharmacy from Albany (N.Y.) College of Pharmacy and a master’s degree in
hospital pharmacy from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her doctorate is in
administration, supervision and curriculum design from the University of Colorado, Denver.
Wiser served as dean and professor at St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Allied
Health Professions from 1995-98. He served as assistant dean and professor of clinical pharmacy
at Purdue University from 1991-95, and chaired the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Campbell
University from 1987-91. Wiser also has held faculty positions at the University of Maryland. He
earned his bachelor’s and Pharm D degrees from the University of Minnesota.
The WSU college vacancy was created when former dean Mohmoud M. Abdel-Monem
retired in 1998. Currently serving as interim dean is Dennis Clifton.
