WSU Wins Nine Case District VIII Awards in 1999 Competition

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University won nine awards — seven silvers and
two bronze — in a recent regional professional competition in communication and publishing.
WSU was honored in the 1999 Council for Advancement and Support of Education District
VIII Juried Awards Competition. The district includes the Pacific Northwest and Western
Canada. This is the 16th consecutive year for the program. Awards were presented Feb. 22
during the district’s annual conference in Portland.
Silver award winners include:
— Universe, WSU’s magazine of research and scholarship, published by the WSU Graduate
School, periodicals-magazines 5,000-20,000 circulation category. Credits go to Jo Savage,
designer, and George Bedirian, associate editor, both of University Publications and Printing;
and editor Tim Steury, News and Information Services.
— The Ask Dr. Universe project, including the newspaper column and web site
, received two silvers, one in projects-public relations and the other
in World Wide Web site coordination. Through the column, the doctor (a female cat) answers
scientific questions from children and adults around the world. For both awards, credits go to
Steury as creative director; Kate Peterson, research assistant and writer; and Carol Hill, web
designer, News and Information Services. Cartoonist Sonja Oei is also credited for the public
relations award.
— Cover of “Edge of Tomorrow: An Arctic Year,” a book published by the WSU Press, for
design, illustration and photography-individual design. Credits go to David Hoyt, designer,
University Publications and Printing; and Keith Petersen, WSU Press editor.
— Future Teachers of Color, projects-public relations. The WSU College of Education FTOC
recruitment program helps solve the critical under-representation of teachers of color in the
state’s kindergarten-12th grade public schools. Credits go to Bill London, College of Education
senior communications officer; and Collin Tong, associate director, communications and
marketing, WSU West, Seattle.
— Children’s Transition Clinic, electronic media-fundraising-alumni relations videos. The
video helps raise private funding for the Spokane YWCA’s Children’s Transition Clinic. The
clinic is staffed as a practicum site by faculty and students of the Intercollegiate Center for
Nursing Education/WSU College of Nursing. Credit goes to Tom McArthur, ICNE/WSU College
of Nursing communications manager.
— WSU Alumni Association, web sites-alumni relations . Credits go to
Brian Bates, association membership coordinator; and Mark Wilcomb, CougNet Services
director, and Nicole Wood, art director, both of News and Information Services.
Bronze award winners included:
— CougNet global online community for WSU alumni and friends ,
