PULLMAN, Wash. — A gift from a Washington State University alumna in honor of her father, Sidney R. Buckley of Kettle Falls, has created a scholarship endowment in WSU’s Honors College.
The Sidney R. Buckley and Daughter Honors Scholarship Endowment will assist WSU honors students with financial constraints from rural areas of Eastern Washington. The first recipient will be announced in spring of 1999.
The endowment was established by Jody Russelle Buckley in honor of her father, who graduated from WSU in 1947. Russelle Buckley, an alumna of the Honors Program, graduated from WSU in 1987 with a degree in English. She lives in Menlo Park, Calif., with her husband, Mark Horowitz, professor and director of the Computer Systems Laboratory and Yahoo! Founders Chair at Stanford University.
Sidney Buckley, who has served as a judge in Eastern Washington for many years, received a bachelor’s degree in political science from WSU and was a member of the boxing team. He also earned a law degree from the University of Washington.
A dinner reception was held at WSU recently with members of the Buckley family, including three of the Buckley daughters and WSU President Samuel Smith.
“This scholarship will help us recruit outstanding students to this program,” said Jane Lawrence, director of the Honors College. “We are proud to have a permanent legacy in this family’s name at the college and pleased that it will be so beneficial to students.”
