PULLMAN, Wash. — Epifanio “E” San Juan, chair of the Washington State University Department of
Comparative American Cultures, will speak at the 1998 WSU Multicultural Student Convocation.
San Juan will discuss “The Question of Race in the 21st Century” at the public event, which begins at
5:30 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Compton Union Building Ballroom.
Convocation emcee will be Zarah de Leon, a WSU student from Kent and chair of the Council of
Multicultural Student Presidents.
Sponsored by the WSU Office of Multicultural Student Services, the convocation is an annual fall
event for students, faculty and staff to celebrate diversity. “It re-focuses the campus’ attention on diversity
issues and establishes the importance of multiculturalism to everyone in the community,” said Steve
Nakata, the office’s interim director. “New students of color at WSU are especially encouraged to attend so
they may become familiar with the university’s vast network of support for them.”
In addition to San Juan’s address, the convocation agenda will include awards to WSU community
members who have made significant contributions to promoting diversity. The Multicultural Student
Services staff, Student Mentors and other multicultural student leaders will be recognized.
