PULLMAN, Wash. — Carla M. Kroeze, an international business consultant and educator, has joined the faculty in the Hospitality Management Professional Development (HMPD) program at Washington State University’s Seattle Center for Hotel and Restaurant Administration (SCHRA).
Kroeze will teach “Operations Management Control” Nov. 10-Dec. 8, and “Finance and Managerial Accounting”Jan. 5-Feb. 2. The operations course will cover forecasting, capacity management, managing service, labor cost control, cash control and purchasing. The finance course will include understanding income statements and balance sheets, analyzing financial statements, break-even analysis, cost volume profit analysis and product pricing.
Kroeze recently completed consulting projects in Seattle, Tokyo and Sydney, Australia, where she conducted management training courses, performed financial analysis and support, led seminars in business techniques, and analyzed and implemented operational changes for productivity improvement.
She is a former assistant professor at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Va., where she was nominated for the Outstanding Faculty of the Year award. Kroeze has been an associate manager for ITT Sheraton Corp. in Orlando, Fla., and an accountant at both Westin Hotels and Resorts and Chevron USA, both in Concord, Calif. She earned a certificate in professional hospitality management at SCHRA and served as a graduate research assistant. Her master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration are from the University of Washington.
SCHRA is the westside arm of WSU Hotel & Restaurant Administration, located at Seattle Central Community College. SCHRA’s HMPD program offers continuing education and career enhancement opportunities to hospitality industry professionals through local and regional courses. HMPD courses lead to a certificate from WSU’s College of Business and Economics.
This fall, five HMPD courses are offered and 28 students are enrolled. There are 67 students enrolled at SCHRA working toward a four-year baccalaureate degree in hotel & restaurant administration.
The 66-year-old hospitality program at WSU, the fifth oldest in the country, ranks consistently among the top 5 percent of 170 similar programs nationwide. More than 500 undergraduates are enrolled in the WSU HRA program in Pullman, Seattle and Brig, Switzerland. As of this semester, students interested in hospitality can major or minor in the program.
