PULLMAN, Wash.–The Washington State University Museum of Art has received an Institute of Museum and Library Services biennial grant of more than $70,000 for general operating support.
The WSU museum is one of four museums in Washington state to receive the award.
“The competition gets stiffer each year,” says Patricia Watkinson, museum director. “This year, 19 percent of the applicants were successful. We are very fortunate to be among them.”
One of 1,061 applicants, the Museum of Art received a grant of $70,063. IMLS awarded $15 million to 202 museums.
Diane Frankel, director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, said the WSU Museum of Art’s success “demonstrates an outstanding level of professionalism among all of its staff.”
“This small, well-run organization makes excellent use of limited resources in a region of few cultural amenities. Its attention to intellectually stimulating programs and the collaboration of faculty and visitors is excellent,” a viewer stated.
Currently, the WSU Museum of Art and the Seattle Art Museum are the only Washington art museums receiving IMLS general operation support.
Other new recipients are the Seattle Aquarium, Seattle Children’s Museum and the Museum of Flight, also in Seattle.
