PULLMAN, Wash.– Emergency, public safety and health officers from Washington State University and surrounding communities will conduct a disaster exercise Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to noon on the WSU campus.
A simulated release of toxic substances will test the emergency response plans and the readiness of police, fire and medical units, according to Dan Semler, WSU fire chief, who will coordinate the exercise.
The site of the mock accident will be the Coliseum parking lot. Police and fire department officers will circulate through areas of the campus and adjoining neighborhoods to simulate contacting residents, Semler said. There will be simulated casualties transported to emergency treatment sites, he added.
Every effort will be made to minimize traffic delays and rerouting, Semler said. The west side of the Coliseum lot will be available for parking, but the east side will be closed. Motorists also are advised to avoid North Fairway and South Fairway Drives, staging areas for emergency teams and vehicles.
