WSU hosts College Language Association Convention in Vancouver

WSU will sponsor and host the 83rd Annual College Language Association Convention from Wednesday, April 23, through Saturday, April 26, at the Hilton Vancouver Washington. This year’s theme is “Redefining Expansion and Exploration: Black Diasporic Literatures, Cultures and Pedagogies.”

“I have been a member of CLA for two decades, and it has been imperative to my career growth. Each convention has provided essential fellowship, research development and career advancement,” said Thabiti Lewis, professor of English and chair of the CLA host committee. “I’m excited that WSU has made it possible to host the CLA Convention on the West Coast for the first time.”

Founded in 1937 by Black language professors at what is now LeMoyne-Owen College, a historically Black college in Memphis, Tenn., the CLA was established to combat racial discrimination in academia and to create educational opportunities for underrepresented students. Today, the organization continues to foster inclusive dialogue and collaborative scholarship in the fields of language, literature and culture.
