College restructures advising, mentoring

A new model of professional advising and faculty mentoring for undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts will be implemented under the guidance of Tom Whitacre, who has been appointed interim director of advising.
All majors, minors and pre-certified students will receive the services of a professional adviser. Advisers will handle all routine advising issues, such as course registration, degree audits to assess progress toward graduation, and referrals to other appropriate student services.
In addition, all majors will be assigned a faculty mentor in their home department who will be available for consultation and guidance regarding career opportunities, preparation for graduate or professional school, and similar issues.
Students will receive detailed information on the transition directly from their home departments in the coming weeks.

Whitacre also will continue in his role as associate director of the Liberal Arts General Studies Program.
This year, the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), through its National Awards Program for Academic Advising, selected Whitacre as an Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit recipient in the Academic Advising-Administrator category.
Enhanced services to students are being provided by the college through the careful restructuring of existing resources.
