PULLMAN – The colleges of Pharmacy and of Veterinary Medicine welcomed their classes of 2013 on Friday in Pullman at ceremonies held in the CUB auditorium and Beasley coliseum respectively.

During the events, students took oaths of professionalism and received the white coats of the medical professions.

According to information from the College of Veterinary Medicine, the “white coat ceremony” was established by Dr. Arnold Gold at Columbia University Medical School in 1993.

He argued that students should recite the Hippocratic Oath and receive their white coats at the start of medical school, rather than at graduation. The ceremony was designed to impress upon students, physicians and the public the symbolic role of the white coat – embodying the values that are key to the medical professions.
