WSU Student Club Receives Scholarships to Attend National Conference

PULLMAN, Wash.—Six officers of the Association for Women in Communications (AWC) at Washington State University will be attending the 2009 AWC National Conference in Seattle on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The officers were awarded scholarships from the Seattle Professional Chapter of AWC and will use them to attend one day of the three-day event. The WSU chapter officers that will be attending are President Holly Luka, Vice President Erin Smith, Secretary Lauren Hobson, Historian Erica VanNatta, Director of Public Relations Brianna Brennick and Director of Community Service Kacie McPartland.

The WSU chapter of AWC won the 2009 Outstanding Student Chapter award and the officers attending the conference will have the chance to accept their award at a chapter awards breakfast.

“We are pleased to be recognized as the Outstanding Student Chapter of the Year,” said Faculty Adviser Roberta Kelly.

At the conference the student officers will also have the chance to hear keynote speakers, attend workshops and attend the International Matrix and Clarion dinner and awards ceremony.

The Clarions honor excellence in more than 100 categories across all communications. Clarion winners represent media companies large and small, leading corporations, small business and nonprofit associations and institutions. The dinner and awards ceremony this year will feature International Matrix Award honoree Ann Curry from NBC News and The Today Show.

“Attending the conference will provide students with a major opportunity to network with professionals in various fields of communication,” said Kelly.

AWC is a professional organization that supports the advancement of women across all disciplines of communication by recognizing excellence, promoting leadership and giving members an advantage in the evolving communication field.

The WSU chapter of AWC helps prepare women for various communication fields by fostering networking opportunities through job shadows and guest speakers. They also work to build their resumes through workshops and community service projects.
