PULLMAN WSU Information Technology Services in partnership with Microsoft will be implementing a new e-mail account service for WSU students in May. Powered by Microsoft Outlook Live, this new service will provide Outlook Live e-mail to students, as well as a comprehensive suite of other Outlook Live services.
“Partnering with Microsoft on this service gives us the ability to offer more resources as well as a unified e-mail communication tool for the students,” said Arlo Clizer, ITS director of operations.
WSU students will have access to a variety of products beyond the 10GB e-mail account; they will also have access to a 25GB Skydrive, Office Live Workspace, Outlook Calendar and an instant messenger. All of these services are accessible from any internet capable computer or mobile device.
“You get anytime, anywhere access to your files and email,” said Markus Weickenmeier, Microsoft program manager. “Think of Skydrive as a 25GB flash drive accessible on any computer on the Internet.”
This service is for all students, both undergraduate and graduate, and will be a lifetime e-mail address that students can continue to use even after they graduate, Clizer said. The format of the email name will be firstname.lastname@email.wsu.edu with appropriate provisions for same names.
“Our partnership with Microsoft in providing this service and resource to WSU students is a cost saving of approximately $100,000,” said Viji Murali, vice president of Information Services and CIO for WSU. “Even in these economic times it is important to look at opportunities to save financial resources while still providing cutting edge technology for our students.”
The new service also adds a shared email address book for all WSU student, faculty and staff members. This feature will assist faculty and other academic offices in better communicating with the students.
