Love, young and old, muse of opera workshop

“Love for Young and Old” is the theme of the free fall WSU Opera Workshop presentation at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in Bryan theater.

Directed by Julie Anne Wieck, associate professor of music, the annual production of one-acts or scenes provides singers and actors with the opportunity to perform exciting repertoire while developing acting and stage movement skills.

For this year’s program, the first excerpt, from Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta “Princess Ida,” involves a young princess who establishes a college for women in reaction to an earlier arranged marriage. Her betrothed and two friends infiltrate the school disguised as women.

This will be followed by a five scenes from Gian Carlo Menotti’s 20th-century opera, “The Old Maid and the Thief.” The story revolves around the excitement created when a handsome stranger comes to town and takes up residence in the home of an old maid. It is surprising what lengths the women will go to in order to keep him around.

The students are accompanied by Karen Savage, instructor in the School of Music.
