The cost of WSU Pullman parking permits and hourly garage rates will go up next year. Online permit registration will begin Tuesday, March 24. Annual permits expire the Friday before fall classes begin.
The 3.5 percent increase will mean annual permit increases between $3 and $18 and an increase in garage rates from $1.85 to $1.90 per hour.
No increases in parking fines or parking meter rates are proposed.
Annual permit renewals for 2009/2010 can be done online. Eligible annual permit holders will be contacted via a myWSU portal notice and a post card mailing that will direct them to the WSU Parking and Transportation website for the renewal,

“The decision to increase parking permits and hourly garage rates is based on a year-to year-review,” said John Shaheen director of Parking, Transportation and the Visitor Center.
The Board of Regents gave authority to the president in 2004 to approve increases in parking permit rates beginning in fiscal year 2008, as long as the increment does not exceed the western consumer price index (CPI) – 3.5 percent for 2008 – and hourly increases in parking garage rates don’t exceed 5 cents, said Shaheen.
The increase for 2009-10 was approved in February by President Elson S. Floyd and the University Parking and Transportation Task Force after they reviewed the financial analysis for 2008.

Parking and Transportation Services is a self-sustaining department and its financial needs are facility-driven, Shaheen said. Self-sustaining means it doesn’t receive money from the state. Therefore, maintenance and capital improvement funding comes from revenue (i.e. parking permits, etc.)
“We need to make sure our facilities remain clean, safe and well-maintained,” Shaheen said.
The contract for Wheatland Express bus service between WSU and the University of Idaho renewed last fall – does not include summer service, but will resume in fall 2009, Shaheen said.
A valid WSU Network ID is required to renew a parking permit. Anyone who has lost or forgotten their network ID can retrieve it by calling the WSU IT Phone Desk at 509-335-HELP (4357).

As in the past, the initial phase of the renewal is restricted to current eligible permit holders. Once that phase is completed, annual permits will be made available to other parking patrons.
Those who do not have access to a computer to renew or purchase a permit can do so at the WSU Parking and Transportation office.
