The search for an associate vice president for Human Resources is suspended, effective immediately, President Elson Floyd announced.
The decision is in keeping with Gov. Christine Gregoire’s Aug. 4 call for state agencies and universities to save money by freezing hiring. President Floyd had already initiated a hiring slowdown of administrative and professional staff at WSU in late April.
Theresa Elliot-Cheslek will serve as interim director for the Office of Human Resource Services. In that capacity she reports to President Floyd.
Elliot-Cheslek earned a bachelor’s degree in public policy from WSU in 1982. She played for the women’s basketball program while at the university. She did post-graduate study in human resource management at the University of Cincinnati and the University of Memphis.
She began her human resources career in the hospitality industry in 1987, and was personnel director and employment manager for Clarion Hotels in New Orleans and Cincinnati from 1988-1990.
From 1994-1999, she was a human resources specialist at the Spokane Regional Health District, joining WSU in 1999 as a human relations consultant. She became HRS assistant director in 2004 and associate director in 2006.
Elliot-Cheslek has been certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources with the Society for Human Resource Management since 2001.
