Policing the police:
Community trust in police integrity is essential to community safety. Experts at WSU Spokane are providing training and technical assistance in ethics for street officers, early warning systems, prevention of biased policing, citizen complaint systems, and use of force to help departments maintain the highest levels of integrity. Contact John Goldman, MA, former Spokane County Sheriff and director, Western Regional Institute for Community Oriented Public Safety, WSU Spokane, goldman@wsu.edu, 509.358.7953, www.wricops.spokane.wsu.edu, or Michael Smith, JD, Ph.D, associate professor of criminal justice and a nationally recognized expert on police use of force and biased policing, mikesmith@wsu.edu, 509.358.7711, www.crimj.spokane.wsu.edu.

The California recall: Will a new governor solve California’s troubles? “It is unlikely,” according to Washington State University Political Science Professor David Nice. “The root of the problem,” said Nice, “is the economy and governors don’t traditionally have a great deal of control over that. A change in the governor’s mansion may not mean a change in the fundamental issues.”  Nicecan be reached at 509.334.2268 or dnice@wsu.edu.

High milk prices: According to the Washington Public Interest Research Group, shoppers in the Puget Sound area pay more for milk that anywhere in the contiguous United States. Ned Zaugg, an area extension WSU dairy faculty member in Snohomish County, said the Seattle area megastores offer a variety of loss leaders other than milk, a traditional loss leader, to entice the shoppers into their stores. Milk marketing in this manner can produce high profit margins on a daily staple that most families purchase regularly. Zaugg can be reached at 425.357.6018 or zaugg@wsu.edu.
