PULLMAN, Wash. — Tim Freson, associate director of research at Health & Wellness Services at Washington State University, will present, “Body Image: In Bondage to Society’s Perceptions,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, in Smith CUE 203. The event is open at no charge to the public.
In this fifth presentation on Common Reading Tuesdays, Freson will pose such questions as, “Is what you see in the mirror reality?” and “Do you judge yourself based on social influences?” The expert on body image and eating disorders will also examine social influences on body satisfaction, and such disorders as muscle dysmorphia, anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating nervosa.
“These topics expand on the subjects presented in the Common Reading book chosen for this year’s freshmen,” said Karen Weathermon, director of Learning Communities/Freshman Focus and co-director of the Common Reading program. “They begin to examine the ‘living body’ as opposed to cadavers.
“’Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers’ is in the hands of about 3,500 students and dozens of faculty using the book in courses across many majors this semester. The book touches on types of research that are taking place here at WSU. The subject of body image is one of great interest to students reading the book and others in our community.”
Common Reading Tuesdays help extend lessons from the common reading book beyond the classroom. World-class researchers, through presentations and panels, share their expertise with students and the university community in evening presentations.
