Cougs kick off first open practice

PULLMAN — WSU head coach Paul Wulff led his first open practice as a Cougar, 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Rogers Field.
 
At age 41, Wulff is the 13th-youngest Football Bowl Subdivision head coach, according to a poll of responding sports information directors.
 
 
Heat was obviously was a challenge for players, as coaches worked to push the team’s limits and drive hard on all plays. Water carriers were popular, as coaches also reminded players to stay hydrated.
 
The Coug team ran a split squad practice, with crimson (first and second units) at 9 a.m., and gray (select returners and newcomers) at 2:30 p.m.
 

The two squads will switch times Wednesday, and then come together Thursday in helmets and shoulder pads, practicing at 9 a.m. The first full-pad practice will be Saturday at 9 a.m.

WSU senior wide receiver Brandon Gibson and junior center Kenny Alfred  were on a watch lists this summer. Gibson was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, awarded annually to the nation’s most outstanding college football player. For the second straight year Alfred was named to the Rimington Award Watch List, awarded annually to the nation’s top center.

Six games televised

Daily football blog

WSU’s Sports Information office has launched a daily blog to keep football fans up to date.

“In this world of new media, we felt this was the best way to directly reach the fans of Cougar athletic programs,” said blogger Joe Nickell.
“This is where we will break news and bring you behind the scenes with student-athletes, coaches and athletic department staff to give you a look inside that you can’t get anywhere else – and we will be having one for each of WSU’s sport programs.”

WSU and FSN recently announced an agreement to televise the Cougars’ Sept. 20 football home game against Portland State with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
 
Five other Cougar games have already been selected for television, including WSU’s season-opener against Oklahoma State (Aug. 30) at Qwest Field in Seattle. The game will be televised live by FSN with a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.

FSN will televise three additional Cougar home games: the game against California, Sept. 6, which is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff; the game against USC, Oct. 18, which is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start; and the annual Apple Cup against Washington, Nov. 22, televised by FSN with a noon start from Pullman. The lone televised road contest at this point comes when the Cougars travel to Waco, Texas to face Baylor, Sept. 13. That game will also be televised by FSN with an 11:30 a.m. local (9:30 a.m. PT) start.
