Middle School Students, Parents Learn About College at Nov. 17 Event

RICHLAND, Wash. — Students and their parents from three area middle schools are coming to Washington State University Tri-Cities on Saturday, Nov. 17, to learn about college requirements, costs and academic opportunities.

Family Fun Day is sponsored by the WSU Tri-Cities Latino and early outreach programs, including GEAR UP and the Yakima Valley/Tri-Cities Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA).

About 150 sixth- through eighth-graders — with their families — are expected from Isaac Stevens Middle School in Pasco and Sierra Vista and Harrison middle schools in Sunnyside.

“It is an opportunity for parents to get involved in the preparation of their student’s college education,” said JR Gomez, parent connection coordinator for the WSU Tri-Cities early outreach program.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the WSU Tri-Cities campus, 2710 University Drive, Richland. The agenda includes a campus tour, workshops on financial aid and admissions, lunch and a show by the Pacific Science Center. Spanish translation will be provided.

“It is critical that parents as well as students completely understand how to increase their admissions eligibility and how to succeed at a university,” Gomez said. “In addition, families need to be aware of the financial resources that are out there available to offset college costs.
