An Evening of American Songs at WSU

PULLMAN, Wash.–In the first concert of the Washington State University School of Music Faculty Artist Series this fall, professor Julie Anne Wieck, soprano, will present a recital at 8 p.m. Sept. 14 in Bryan Hall Theatre.

Entitled “An Evening of American Art Song,” this performance will include some of the most well-known composers and works in the American art song repertoire, represented by Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Libby Larsen and George Gershwin. 

The recital will also include the premiere of two vocal works written for Wieck by WSU faculty member Gregory Yasinitsky. Joining her on this recital will be pianist and director of the School of Music, Gerald Berthiaume. 

On sabbatical this semester, Wieck will be traveling to Kyiv, Ukraine to spend five weeks collaborating with faculty and students at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, also known as the National Music Academy of Ukraine. While there, she will present this recital with Berthiaume as a representation of American art song, a genre which the students get little exposure to in Ukraine. 

The Music Faculty Artist Series is in its second year of existence. It was created to develop more scholarship funding for students in music at WSU. Admission is free to WSU students with ID, $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and other students.
