WSU Pharmacy Students have Winning Business Plan

PULLMAN, Wash. — For the third time in four years, a team of Washington State University pharmacy students has advanced to the finals in a national business plan competition.

Team members Jacqueline Eide, Iris Kim, David White and Drew Yancey – all from the class of 2009 – will be competing in October against teams from the University of Washington and the University of Buffalo for the championship title of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) business plan competition.

All three teams will give live presentations at the NCPA annual convention in Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 13-17. The three finalist teams were selected from a field of 32 and were announced at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) annual meeting held recently in Orlando, Fla.

Last year, a WSU team took first place in the NCPA competition and was treated to a conference in Aruba in February and $6,000.  The first-place prize this year includes a February conference in Cancun, Mexico, as well as $6,000 to be divided between the winning NCPA student chapter and a College of Pharmacy dean’s fund for promoting independent pharmacy.

Linda Garrelts MacLean, a clinical associate pharmacy professor, is the team’s advisor again this year and said many community pharmacists in Washington and other faculty at the College have acted as mentors, advisors and counselors to this team.

The team members will be practicing for their live presentation with members of last year’s team, also from the class of 2009.

The team’s plan calls for buying two established pharmacies in Washington state and retaining the business name, “Rxtra Care Pharmacy” as well as the business philosophy of giving patients “the extra care they deserve.” The pharmacies are owned by Holly Henry of Seattle, a WSU pharmacy alumnus, and her husband, Mike.

The NCPA competition began in 2004 and WSU took second place that year, with 16 teams competing.

The competition is known as the Pruitt-Schutte Student Business Plan Competition to honor two champions of independent pharmacy – the late Neil Pruitt Sr. and H. Joseph Schutte.
