WSU Hosts Peace Author Scott Hunt April 12

PULLMAN, Wash. – Scott A. Hunt, author of “The Future of Peace: On the Front Lines with the World’s Great Peacemakers,” will present a public lecture at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in the Smith Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE), Room 203, at Washington State University.

A reception and book signing from 3-4 p.m. in Smith CUE 518 will precede Hunt’s lecture.

Sponsors of his visit are the members of Phi Eta Sigma, a student national honor society on campus, WSU Honors College and The Martin Institute for Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution at the University of Idaho.

“We have read Dr. Hunt’s book and are inspired by his quest to meet the world’s great peacemakers,” said Ashley Loyd, Phi Eta Sigma co-president and Honors College student majoring in International Business and Hospitality Business Management. “We think that academic excellence is achieved in the classroom, but excellence itself is achieved through understanding and experience.”

She said that Phi Eta Sigma hopes that having Hunt share his experiences will help WSU students become more aware of international peacemaking processes, inspire them to contribute and care for their local and international communities, and strive for academic success.

Hunt, a journalist, is a graduate of Harvard University having studied government with a specialization in political philosophy. He currently lives in San Francisco and teaches Buddhism for the University of California at Berkeley’s continuing education program.

For his book, he traveled around the world on a three-year quest to glean wisdom from the world’s great peacemakers. He shares stories from the Tibetan moral authority the Dalai Lama, Myanmar’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, Costa Rica’s Nobel Peace Laureate Oscar Arias, Cambodia’s Supreme Patriarch Maha Ghosananda, and famed primatologist and humanitarian Jane Goodall, among others.

Hunt recently founded People of Peace International to engage in peacemaking endeavors. He is also an advisor to the Acceleration Studies Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping people understand, predict and guide accelerating developments in science and technology, and investigate their impact on business and society.
