Summer Science Day Camps Promise Adventures, Discovery for Kids

RICHLAND, Wash. — Rockets, animals, goop and an Egyptian mystery offer fun learning for kids at the Summer Science Day Camps.
 
The science camps are put on by Washington State University Tri-Cities for kids who will be entering kindergarten through fifth grade in Fall 2007. The weeklong sessions use hands-on activities and curriculum from Discovery Quest (www.scienceadventures.com).
 
The Summer Science Day Camp schedule is:
 
• Mystery of the Pharaoh’s Treasure, June 18-22, at Bethlehem Lutheran School, 1409 S. Garfield St., Kennewick. Full-day program. Journey to Egypt to hunt for long-forgotten treasures. Campers will decipher hieroglyphics, unearth an ancient mummy, and take home gold treasure.
 
• Gizmos, Gadgets, and Goop, June 25-29, at Bethlehem Lutheran School, 1409 S. Garfield St., Kennewick. Full-day program. Imagination and science mix to create amazing contraptions. Campers will explore electricity with a hands-on electronics kit, make ice cream without a freezer, and put the glow into a giant glob of glow slime.
 
• Space & Rocketry, July 9-13, on the WSU Tri-Cities campus, 2710 University Drive, Richland. Full-day and half-day programs available. Join a mission through space on an amazing journey to the stars. Campers will build and launch the solid-fueled Comet rocket, make a working telescope, and build a light-up model of our solar system. Full-day campers also will create a fiber optic constellation.
 
• Go Wild! Awesome Animal Adventure, July 16-20, on the WSU Tri-Cities campus, 2710 University Drive, Richland. Full-day and half-day programs available. Investigate extreme plants and animals. All campers will meet live animals, build a microscope, examine a bug’s life, and enter the world of bats and birds. Full-day campers also will dissect owl pellets.
 
• Mystery of the Pharaoh’s Treasure, July 23-27, on the WSU Tri-Cities campus, 2710 University Drive, Richland. Full-day and half-day programs available. Journey to Egypt to hunt for long-forgotten treasures. Campers will decipher hieroglyphics, unearth an ancient mummy, and take home gold treasure. Full-day campers also will build a rock and crystal collection.
 
• Gizmos, Gadgets and Goop, July 30- Aug. 3, on the WSU Tri-Cities campus, 2710 University Drive, Richland. Full-day and half-day programs available. Imagination and science mix to create amazing contraptions. Campers will explore electricity with a hands-on electronics kit, make ice cream without a freezer, and put the glow into a giant glob of glow slime. Full-day campers also will build motorized K’Nex racers.
 
Cost is $140 for a half-day and $225 for a full-day camp. Discounts are available for people who register by May 31. Limited scholarships are available.
