WSU Music Professor Wins Coveted Competition

PULLMAN, Wash. – Jeffrey Savage, assistant professor in the Washington State University School of Music and Theatre Arts, has been named a winner in the piano performance category of the 22nd annual Ladies Musical Club (LMC) of Seattle music competition.

“The LMC competition is a very prestigious and well-known event in the Pacific Northwest,” said Erich Lear, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and former director of the School of Music and Theatre Arts at WSU. “We are proud of Savage’s accomplishment and pleased that so many in western Washington will have the opportunity to become familiar with his talent through the upcoming LMC concerts.”

Savage described the level of performance at the competition, which is open to young professionals from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska, as very high. “Many of this year’s competitors hold degrees from top schools in the country, including Eastman, Oberlin and Juilliard,” said Savage. “The competition also included artists who perform regularly with major ensembles, including the Seattle Symphony, Pacific Northwest Ballet and Seattle Opera.”

Fifty-three entries were submitted on CD in the first round of the LMC competition this year. From the fields of 17 piano, 14 wind, 10 string and 12 voice performances, 19 finalists were chosen. Four winners were named following live performances.

Winners of the LMC competition will tour western Washington and perform three public concerts from Sept. 17 to Sept. 23. Numerous public school performances will also be scheduled. Dates have not been finalized.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to share great music with underserved communities in western Washington through concerts and community outreach opportunities,” Savage said. “I’m also excited about this opportunity to represent WSU and to recruit future students for the School of Music.”

The Ladies Musical Club of Seattle, the oldest arts organization in Seattle, has supported musical organizations including the Seattle Symphony, the Seattle Youth Symphony, the Seattle Young Artists Festival and the San Francisco and Metropolitan Opera Auditions. LMC is celebrating its 115th year.
