Two Loyal Cougars Receive Alumni Achievement Award

PULLMAN, Wash. –Two graduates of Washington State University were given the Alumni Achievement Award on Friday, June 9, at the WSU Athletics Tri-Cities Tailgate. The awards were presented by WSU Alumni Association volunteer Rob Ellsworth and former Cougar Club President Ray Whitlow.

The first recipient, Jeff Gordon of Pasco graduated from WSU in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics. He founded Gordon Brothers Winery in 1980 with the help of his wife Vicki and brother Bill. Gordon Brothers has consistently produced award-winning wines and is considered a leader in the Washington wine industry. Gordon is Life member of the WSU Alumni Association and chairman on the Washington Wine Commission.

Roger Duprel of Kennewick, the second recipient of the award, is a former captain of the Cougar football team and is a Life member on the WSU Alumni Association. Duprel was a 3-year letterman on the WSU football team and graduated in 1961. After graduating, Duprel served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps until 1965. He then went on to work for two different corporations before founding Sammamish Products and Duprel Storage in 1979.

Over the years both men have continued to generously contribute to their alma mater. Gordon has been an advisor for WSU Tri-Cities for over 20 years and is a consistent volunteer for Alumni Association and WSU Foundation events in the area. Duprel has been involved in Cougar Athletics and Student Services Programs. He is a member of the athletic volunteer committees, the Cougar Athletic Foundation Council and was introduced as a WSU Foundation Benefactor in 2004.

Gordon and Duprel are the 457th and 458th graduates to receive the Alumni Achievement Award. The award was created in 1970 by the WSUAA Board of Directors as its highest honor to recognize alumni who have given outstanding service to WSU and made contributions to their professions, community and nation. The award encourages alumni to provide perpetual service to WSU.
