An 18-hole round at Palouse Ridge Golf Club would cost
Whitman County resident golfers $45.50 from Monday through Thursday and $71.50 from Friday through Sunday, according to a preliminary set of rates released by the university last week.
The course is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008.
The rate for students would be $26 for an 18-hole round during the week, $39 on weekends. Faculty and staff rates would be $39 during the week and $58.50 on weekends. Reduced cost twilight rates would be available every day.
WSU alumni will be offered a discount when they present their alunmi cards.
Mel Taylor, WSU’s executive director of real estate operations and external affairs, said the tentative rates were established based on a market analysis of greens fees of similar golf courses in the region and of other
university-owned courses nationwide. In establishing the proposed rates, Taylor said the university also looked at the amount of revenue that would be needed to make the course financially viable.
Memberships will be available; membership rates have not been established as yet.
The course is being designed by John Harbottle III of Tacoma. Each hole will have five different tee positions. From the shortest tees, the course will measure 5,289 yards; from the longest tees, it will be 7,308 yards.
University officials expect the course to be one of the finest in the state, and an appropriate venue for NCAA and other tournament play.
The cost of the course, which is at the site of WSU’s previous nine-hole course, is estimated at $8.4 million. Construction costs will be financed through private fund-raising and golf course revenues.
Construction of a new clubhouse will begin this summer. The course will also feature an expanded driving range and practice area, which could open this fall.
