WSU int’l athlete among those sidelined

A new NCAA rule wil make WSU basketball player Fabian Boeke among those declared ineligible this season, according to a Jan. 9 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

National Collegiate Athletic Association announced last fall that it would begin regulating the eligibility of international players, taking the responsibility away from colleges.

Among those the rule affected were two high-profile German basketball recruits — Lucca Staiger at Iowa State University, and Fabian Boeke at Washington State University — who now have to forgo a year of eligibility because they had played in a nonprofit, government-sponsored league where two teammates had been paid about $200 a month.
The WSU athletic department has been working with the NCAA throughtout the fall on this issue.

In a previous WSU Athletics release WSU Head Coach Tony Bennett said, “This is an unfortunate situation because Fabian paid his way to go to high school and competed on the club team affiliated with his school. To Fabian’s knowledge, and ours, he was competing on a team that would not jeopardize his amateur status. We will do everything we can to have Fabian’s eligibility restored.”
