Business dean returns to faculty temporarily

PULLMAN — Eric R. Spangenberg, dean of Washington State University’s College of Business, has temporarily returned to the college’s Department of Marketing where he holds the Maughmer Freedom Philosophy Chair.

“An internal audit found that a courtesy car program implemented by the college was not executed in a manner consistent with state policy,” said WSU Provost Robert C. Bates. “Dean Spangenberg has taken responsibility for the error and will temporarily step back from the dean’s responsibilities.

The College of Business implemented the program in spring 2007 and it provided three hybrid vehicles. The program has now been discontinued. On Feb. 19, 2008, Dr. Spangenberg will resume his duties as dean of the college.”

“In establishing this courtesy car program, we unknowingly neglected to follow appropriate protocol. This oversight was an unfortunate error and, as dean, I take responsibility for that error,” Spangenberg said.

David Sprott, the Boeing/Scott and Linda Carson Chair in Marketing and associate dean for graduate programs, has been named acting dean for the WSU College of Business, Bates announced. This move was effective Nov. 19 and will extend over a three-month period.

“I am very pleased that Dr. Sprott has accepted this assignment, and I have complete confidence in his ability to serve the college in this position.

The college has made great progress in implementing its strategic plan under Dean Spangenberg, and I am confident that progress will continue under Acting Dean Sprott,” Bates said.

“Dr. Sprott is a valued member of our leadership team, and I have full confidence in his ability to lead the college until my return,” he said.
Sprott came to WSU in 1995 and was promoted to associate professor in 2003.

As associate dean, Sprott has focused on enhancing the MBA and PhD experience at the WSU College of Business. Sprott teaches marketing in the two-year MBA program and mentors numerous doctoral students across WSU.

Sprott is an active researcher who investigates consumer behavior and the effects of social influence, branding and consumer information processes.
