Doba contract focus of press conference

PULLMAN — WSU Athletics has scheduled a 4:30 p.m. press conference today, Nov. 26, including a joint announcement by WSU Director of Athletics Jim Sterk and WSU Head Football Coach Bill Doba. Several area print and electronic media are expected to be present.

However, at 2:10 p.m. today, The Spokesman Review posted a story online stating that “Bill Doba will not return as Washington State’s football coach next season.”

Doba and Sterk were reported to have met morning to discuss the issue, and afterward Doba announced the decision to his assistant coaches.

Doba, 67, just completed his fifth season as head coach, with a 42-35 dramatic win over the University of Washington on Saturday.

Doba currently has a 30-29 as the Coug’s head coach. However, his only winning season was the 10-3 campaign in his first year, 2003, and the Cougars haven’t been to a bowl since then.

Doba’s current contract goes through the 2009 season. He told the media on Sunday, “I’m just going to work until I hear different.”
