“Silhouettes” to showcase faculty, student dance

PULLMAN, Wash. – Dance students from WSU’s School of Music and Theatre Arts will choreograph and perform the best of this year’s repertoire during the “Silhouettes” dance concert Dec. 2 and 3.

Silhouettes, part of the dance program curriculum, provides an opportunity for audiences to see emerging dancers, choreographers, trends and techniques.

The concert is set for 8 p.m. both nights in Daggy Hall’s Jones Theatre.

Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the Daggy Hall Box Office from 2-5:30 p.m. and one hour before curtain. For information or reservations, contact the box office at (509) 335-7236.

The dance concert features 21 works choreographed and performed by beginning, intermediate and advanced dance students and senior instructor Phyllis K.Gooden-Young. Dances range in style from Irish soft shoe, jazz, hip hop and modern.

The Elite Dance Co., comprised of eight preprofessional-level students, will perform three special works especially choreographed for the show: “Safe A Way” and “Georgia,” choreographed by Gooden-Young, and “Leave Your Hat On,” choreographed by student and Elite company member Theresa Mazzeo.

Mazzeo’s piece shows off the style of Bob Fosse with a Broadway flavor. Gooden-Young’s “Safe A Way” explores ritual and dysfunction of societal daily patterns and habits, and “Georgia” is a tribute to the legendary musician and singer Ray Charles.

The Elite Dance Co. members are Pip Cawley, Katy Lawrence, Kayley-Jean McNamara, Mazzeo, Aya Nagasawa, Sable Phillippi, Pearl Stanko and Mia Swartwood.
