Emergencies can strike at work, home

WSU’s Emergency Management Office is working to improve emergency preparedness at work. But the office also wants to remind employees to be prepared at home.

As part of National Preparedness Month during September, the federal Department of Homeland Security is focusing on family emergency preparedness.

The WSU Emergency Management Office encourages all employees and students to take some time this month to consider how well prepared they are for emergencies at home and in vehicles. Some steps might include preparing an emergency supply kit, making a family emergency plan, becoming informed about different hazards, and getting involved in preparing WSU and home communities for potential emergencies.

Emergency Management Coordinator Chris Tapfer recommends these websites — www.ready.gov and redcross.org— to find a variety of information on emergency preparedness.

National Preparedness Month is a nationwide coordinated effort held each September to encourage everyone to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, schools and work places. The goal is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters as well as potential terrorist activity.
