Washington State University administrators Barbara Couture, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and James Schoepflin, director of the School of Music and Theatre Arts, have been elected trustees of the Washington Commission for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The goal of the privately funded, nonprofit organization is to improve individual and community life through public programs that interpret culture and provide a forum for civic dialogue.
“In my capacity as dean and board member, I look forward to involving Washington State University’s College of Liberal Arts with this wonderful organization that supports art and cultural projects throughout the state and connects artists and scholars with our local communities,” Couture said.
As board members, Couture and Schoepflin will meet with fellow commissioners three times a year and will provide input on proposed activities and budget proposals.
“It will be very exciting to work toward greater integration of the performance arts with the traditional humanities, and to help bring focus in Eastern Washington upon the very significant dimensions that the arts and the humanities add to our lives,” Schoepflin said.
