Set designer returns from retirement to help out

After 30 years of service to WSU, retiree Richard Slabaugh has returned to design some sets for the Theatre Department, including the set for the fall production, “Equus.”

“With (Associate Professor) George (Caldwell) on leave this year, we were going to be in a bind to hire a designer before the start of the new season,” said Associate Professor Terry Converse. “Luckily, Dick was in town.”

Slabaugh’s model of the “Equus” set is octagonal. It looks simple but is wonderfully complex to build and run, Converse said.

WSU’s performance of “Equus,” by Peter Schaffer, will open Nov. 6 and run Thursday through Saturday evenings the first two weekends in November. The box office will open Monday, Nov. 3, and daily that week from 1:30-4 p.m. To make reservations in advance, call 335-7236.
