12 faculty join President’s Teaching Academy board

Twelve faculty members have been named to the founding advisory board for the President’s Teaching Academy by Washington State University President V. Lane Rawlins and Provost Robert C. Bates.

2004 marks the inauguration of a Teaching Academy at WSU. In close cooperation with the colleges and urban campuses and utilizing the resources of the Office of Undergraduate Education, the advisory board will begin work this semester overseeing the establishment of the academy.

Key among the board’s initial tasks, according to Bates, will be:

• Developing a plan for expanding academy membership.

• Assisting with university-wide assessment and accreditation preparation efforts.

• Encouraging programs, departments, schools and interdisciplinary teams to use evidence about the quality of the undergraduate learning experience as the basis for revamping curriculum and/or teaching practices to improve student learning.

“Membership in the academy and service on the board,” said Rawlins, “is an honor that not only affirms their past contributions to teaching and learning at WSU but serves to recognize their ability to implement key aspects of our strategic plan related to the academic experience of our students.”

Selected to serve on the board are:

• Carol Sheppard, associate professor, Entomology, College of Agriculture, Natural and Human Resource Sciences.

• Charles Munson, associate professor, Management and Decision Sciences, College of Business and Economics.

• Darcy Miller, professor, Teaching and Learning, College of Education.

• Denny Davis, professor, Biological Systems Engineering, College of Engineering and Architecture.

• Mary Bloodsworth-Lugo, associate professor, Philosophy/Women’s Studies; College of Liberal Arts.

• Renee Hoeksel, professor, Nursing (WSU Vancouver); College of Nursing.

• Raymond Quock, professor, Pharmacy; College of Pharmacy.

• J. Thomas Dickinson, professor, Physics; College of Sciences.

• Kenneth Campbell, professor, Veterinary and Comparative Anatomy, Pharmacology and Physiology; College of Veterinary Medicine.

• David Wang, professor, Architecture; WSU Spokane.

• Paul Strand, associate professor, Psychology; WSU Tri-Cities.

• Tom Tripp, associate professor, Management and Decision Sciences; WSU Vancouver.

College deans and the chancellors of WSU Spokane, Tri-Cities and Vancouver were asked to nominate up to three faculty members noted for their teaching for consideration to serve on the Advisory Board. A nominee from each dean and chancellor was selected, so each college and campus could be represented. The selection committee was comprised of faculty members from the four Strategic Plan Implementation Teams.

Each member of the board will serve a three-year term. They will make recommendations to the president and provost regarding major teaching and learning issues facing the university. Periodically, and at least annually, they will report to the president and the university community on their progress.

“Provost Bates and I look forward to working with them to establish a community of scholars who are committed to promoting and celebrating teaching and learning and encouraging university-wide personal and organizational commitment to the importance of teaching,” Rawlins said.
