Nine WSU Tri-Cities nursing students-all working toward their bachelor degree in nursing-have returned from a week of volunteer service to Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Louisiana.
The students, who spent the week dispensing medications, medical care and supplies to victims and working 12-hour shifts to relieve weary medical teams, arrived home the night of Sept. 11 and were back in the classroom and clinical sessions the following morning.
On-campus and community-wide fundraising efforts have been made to defray the students’ travel costs; however, the students spent thousands of their own dollars in supplies for evacuees.
To lighten the load of these expenses, the Student Nurse’s Relief Fund has been set up at WSU. Anyone wishing to support the students’ voluntary efforts can contact the WSU Tri-Cities Development Office at 372-7264. Donations are tax deductible and all contributions are processed through the offices of the WSU Foundation. Any funds in excess of the students’ expenses will be donated to the Red Cross for Katrina Disaster Relief.
