PULLMAN — Washington State University President V. Lane Rawlins is resting in Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after successfully undergoing ankle surgery Wednesday, Oct. 26.
The surgery took several hours to complete; it involved fusing and removing bone spurs from Rawlins’ ankle. Family members said that Rawlins will probably remain in the hospital until Saturday.
In recent weeks, Rawlins had been wearing a support boot on his foot in response to the increasing pain in his ankle. Doctors determined that the ankle’s condition had continued to deteriorate and recommended the surgery.
As a result of the operation, Rawlins is expected to be off his feet for a number of weeks. In a statement issued last week to the university community, Rawlins said he expected to be engaged in university business as his condition permits during the weeks following surgery. The timetable for his full return to work will be determined as his recovery progresses.
During Rawlins’ recovery, Provost Robert Bates will assume increased management duties.
