WSU building entrances will be marked by Dec. 8

Because of a new state law, smoking will not be allowed within 25 feet of any building entrances on WSU campuses beginning on Thursday, Dec. 8 — the day the law takes effect.

Temporary signs, like the one shown here, will be posted at all entrances as a reminder, with permanent signage planned when time and money allow.

“WSU already prohibits smoking in our buildings,” said Rich Heath, associate vice president, Business Affairs. “For WSU, the main impact of this new law is to expand the smoking ban to include the 25-foot area from building entrances and other parts of buildings where smoke could enter. We also are required to post notices regarding the new law at every building entrance.”

The law requires the WSU Police Department to enforce the smoking prohibition via “infraction” tickets similar to traffic tickets. The fine is $100.

WSU sponsors smoking-cessation programs that faculty, staff and students are encouraged to make use of. Health and Wellness Services operates the program and can be contacted at 335-3521.

The state law, citizen-sponsored Initiative 901, was approved by Washington voters in the Nov. 8 election. It bans smoking inside public places and workplaces and forbids lighting up within 25 feet of doors, windows and vents. Passers-by on public sidewalks or streets are exempted.
