WSU recognizes National Volunteer Week April 23-29

The WSU Community Service Learning Center will host Civic Engagement Week April 23-29 in honor of National Volunteer Week.

“All year long students are involved in giving back to the community in so many ways,” said Troy Robey, service learning coordinator for the Community Service Learning Center. “Many times, students’ actions go unnoticed. We want to take a week to highlight all the work they have done during the year.”

One student, one faculty member/instructor and one community member will receive the Distinguished Service Learning Award for their dedication to helping others. Nominations for this award will be accepted until March 29 and can be downloaded at cslc.wsu.edu.

WSU students and faculty will have the opportunity to participate in service projects and attend presentations on local service throughout the week.

In addition to the service activities, student groups will present their work to aid the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina from 4-5:30 p.m. April 26 in the CUB, Room 212.

Career Services will also hold a workshop for students interested in careers with non-profit organizations April 27 from 4-6 p.m., location to be announced.

Participants in the Communication in Human Relations class, will present their semester-long community service projects throughout the week. Groups of about 30 students contributed to organizations including Early Learning Services, Pioneer Square Apartments, Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse, Harvest House, Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute, Good Samaritan Village and Groundworks Institute.

Students who participated in community service with the Community Service Learning Center will receive a highlighter upon checking in at the CSLC table in the CUB or at the Glenn Terrell Mall during Civic Engagement Week.
