Speaker to address teaching that promotes learning

Maryellen Weimer, professor of Speech Communications at Berks Lehigh Valley College of Pennsylvania State and editor of the “Teaching Professor” newsletter, will visit the Pullman campus on April 11 to lecture on “Teaching that Promotes Learning” at 4:15 p.m. in CUE 202.

Weimer’s presentation, sponsored by the WSU Libraries and The Center for Teaching Learning and Technology, will be based on her book, “Learner Centered Teaching,” and will focus on the following questions:

*If a teacher aspires to teach in ways that promote learning, what does that teacher do about the nuts and bolts of instructional practice?

*What would that teacher do about attendance, assignments, tests, papers, lecturing, group work, classroom management, content and grades?

*How does the teacher balance the learning needs of today’s college students with the content and skills demands of degree and professional programs?

Weimer has more than 25 years of experience in college teaching. She is a well-known writer, speaker, and proponent of effective teaching practices. She was the director of the Instructional Development Program at Pennsylvania State University for 10 years and served as associate director at the National Center on Postsecondary Teaching, Learning, and Assessment.
